OYSTER MARINE LTD Oyster 54

Description

Proven by her current owners as a fantastic bluewater cruising platform for double-handed sailing, Oyster 54 SHALEN was launched in 2009 and still very much looks the part. They have equipped her with everything an owner could need, and she is ready to head off around the world again. All her systems have been regularly updated and maintained, and she really is good to go!

Construction

RCD Status: The yacht conforms with the essential safety requirements of Directive 94/25EC or RCDII (2013/53/EU as appropriate (Recreational Craft Directive) and is categorised A – “Ocean”

Hull, Deck & Superstructure Construction:

  • Laid-up GRP reinforced with Kevlar (for impact resistance) and carbon fibre (for weight gains and stiffness) in appropriate areas, single skin with structural stringers and floors to Lloyds approved design specification. Outer hull laminate in Vinylester resin.
  • Incorporates a balsa core above the waterline for additional strength, stiffness, and insulation.
  • Solid laminate below waterline reinforced with stringers and floors.
  • Painted ‘Stone Gray Metallic’ Awlgrip with G-Line lacquer, and cove line and double boot top lines in ‘Crystal Silver.’
  • Deck moulded in GRP with balsa core.
  • Teak laid decks with self-draining teak laid cockpit. GRP low profile ‘rolled edge’ bulwark.

Maintenance & Performance:

  • Engine hours – approx. 4,600 as of April 2026.
  • Engine last serviced 2025.
  • Cruising speed – approx. 7 knots. Owners have cruised at 7.5 but it uses a lot more fuel, so they usually cruised at 6.5.
  • Maximum speed – approx. 8.9 knots.
  • Fuel consumption - 4.5 litres per hour.
  • Range @ cruising speed – 1000Nm

The fuel tank holds 900 L when filled to the brim. Cruising consumption is between 4 and 4.5 L per hour at 6.5 knots. There is an overdrive on the propeller that provides an additional 0.75 knots in calm seas, but this has not been taken into account. For long-term sailing, the genset needs to run for about 2 hours per day and uses approximately 1L per hour. For practical purposes - considering genset usage and the need to avoid running the fuel tank empty - you should reserve around 100 L for safety. Based on this, a range of 1,000 nautical miles is the figure that has traditionally been used.
