Training update 2023

Published: 25 April 2023

James Brown, YBDSA Training Coordinator has been working hard with Ross Wombwell, Technical Specialist and the Association Chairs to update and develop the ABYA, YDSA and CA training opportunities. Here is James' report:

CA Webinars

We held a Coding Authority webinar on 13th April. The topic was ‘Stability Identification of Open Boats’, and it was the first in a series of training webinars planned for the coming weeks and months. Delivered by the associations new Technical Specialist, Ross Wombwell, the event was tremendously well attended and received.

Our next event is on the evening of 27th April 2023 and will cover ‘Declarations of Conformity and the SCV Codes – What DoCs are telling you’. These webinars are being recorded, so if you are unable to attend live, the content will still be available to view. If you would like to book your place, please get in touch with the team at The Glassworks.

ABYA Academy

After the success of our most recent ABYA Brokerage course in February, the association has decided to proceed with a new format to make our training program accessible to even more students. As part of long held plans for an ‘ABYA Academy’ we will now be offering a 1, 2 and 3-day course. Details on the content of the courses are coming imminently, with the 1-day course scheduled for June 29th, the 2-day for October date TBA, and the 3-day planned for early 2024.

Call for speakers

Earlier in April, Training sent out a list to all YDSA members of webinar topics to be discussed over the next 12-18 months. The response has been very positive, with lots of good feedback and suggestions. We still require more volunteers to present the webinars, so if you would like to share your passion and expertise, please get in touch with James. The association would also like to run a similar program of webinars for our ABYA members, so if you have any ideas for topics you would like to see discussed, or are willing to donate your time to present, please get in touch with either Peter Norris or James Brown.

YDSA Forum

Finally, we have started to make some progress on the long discussed YDSA Forum. A program has been found that fulfills all the functionality requirements we need, and is compatible with our current IT setup. When complete, members will be able to ask questions, post pictures and discuss all things related to marine surveying. The next step is to send it to our developer to review and a timeframe for completion will be given in due course.
